The Russian high-tech development and production company Rostec is planning to revive the once famous photo camera brand Zenit, Rambler News Service (RNS) reported.

"It's a very popular product, we want to make it a luxury device as an analogue to Leica [German camera manufacturer]," said Vasiliy Brovko, the head of Department of Communication and Information at Rostec, according to the source.

Back in 2014, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev talked about the possibility of re-starting the production of Zenit cameras.

The Zenit camera brand was widely popular in the Soviet Union and Russia. As many as 15-million Zenit cameras were manufactured and a lot of them were exported to Western countries, including Germany, Italy, France and Britain.

However, Zenit cameras haven't been manufactured since 2005. Rostec thought it would be a great idea to revive the legendary camera and re-brand the old name.

In late 60 father gave me for my birthday and as a present for making abitur in Gimnasium this famous Zenith camera, and at same time my uncle gave me a Leica 4 which was German model similar to Zenith. Now both cameras are in perfect working conditions only that my son confiscated them as he admires them. Just few days back he returned from trip abroad and brought back 4 cassettes of film . Photos are of superb quality as always. Great news only that I have feeling it is going to be digital as the marking 15M means 15 Megapixel and that means digital mirror reflex camera. Still superb stuff.
