China will issue a five-year cybersecurity plan to protect state secrets, a senior official of the Chinese Ministry of Information and Information Technology said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The plan is expected to focus on better security and software protection in Chinese government departments and strategically important industries.

“We are expecting to see breakthroughs in advanced domestic software development within the next five years," Chen Wei, the director of the ministry's software bureau, said as quoted by China Daily.

The newspaper said that new guidelines may hinder foreign technology companies' operations in China, as many government-backed projects would buy domestic software instead.

Chen Wei predicted that by 2020, Chinese software development industry revenue could exceed $1.6 trillion.
