Progress Cargo Vessel Docking With Space Station Canceled
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The failed Russian Progress cargo vessel that was bound for the International Space Station will cease to exist on May 8, and Roscosmos will give more details on where parts of the spacecraft will strike Earth 24 hours in advance, a Roscosmos source told RIA Novosti.

The cargo vessel was launched on April 28 from the Baikonur Space Station in Kazakhstan, but after reaching space went into an uncontrolled spin and the docking with the ISS was canceled. Since then the vessel continues to spin out of control and is dropping in orbit.

According to the Roscosmos source, the Progress M27-M will perish on May 8 between 1:23 a.m. and 9:55 p.m. Moscow time (22:23 GMT May 7 and 18:55 GMT May 8).

The Progress M-27M spacecraft carrying fuel, oxygen, food and scientific equipment for the International Space Station (ISS) crew, was launched aboard a Soyuz carrier rocket from the Baikonur space center. The craft stopped transmitting telemetry shortly after the booster separation and began to spin.

Last week, Russia's Energia space corporation stressed that the loss of the cargo vessel does not endanger the ISS or the work of its crew. He added that debris from the Progress is unlikely to reach the ground after reentering the Earth's atmosphere.

Roscosmos head Igor Komarov said a special commission had been set up to investigate the causes of the incident. The investigators are expected to report their findings before the launch of a piloted mission to the ISS on May 26.
