MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia’s atomic energy corporation Rosatom has completed a power unit for the world's largest nuclear icebreaker Arktika, the company’s machine-building subsidiary announced Monday.
The 189-yard-long ship worth $1.2billion was officially launched earlier in June. It is expected to be commissioned in December 2019. The ship will be capable of plowing through 10-feet-thick ice while on the move.
"The power unit’s second reactor was sent off from the ZiO-Podolsk plant [part of Rosatom’s Atomenergomash company] on June 26," Atomenergomash said in a press release.
The RITM-200 power unit is composed of two 175MW compact reactors. It weighs half as much as the power units currently in use by the Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker fleet.
