MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia’s Investigative Committee has launched a criminal inquiry on suspicion of abuse of power by the former head of Moscow’s anti-doping lab, the committee’s spokesman said Saturday.
"The main investigative department of the Russian Investigative Committee has initiated criminal proceedings against the former director of the Anti-Doping Center, Grigory Rodchenkov on suspicion of violating Paragraph 1 Article 201 of the Russian Criminal Code," Vladimir Markin said.
Russia’s Investigative Committee opened an inquiry in May against several senior officials at the Russian Athletic Federation (RusAF) in connection with suspected abuse of office. Criminal cases against them were launched earlier in June.
On Friday, IAAF officially announced the decision to uphold the Russian Athletics Federation's ban for IAAF membership. Following the announcement, All-Russian Athletic Federation's (ARAF) Secretary General Mikhail Butov said he was considering appealing the decision.
