Russia Mulls Privatizing ERA-GLONASS Emergency Network
They will start installing this system on all new cars across Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan from next year.

Presently the ERA-Glonass system fulfills its main function of sending out a radio signal with the exact coordinates of a traffic accident and maintaining stable radio communication between passengers and the dispatcher.

It will also make it possible to remotely control any vehicle equipped with an onboard ERA-GLONASS system and shut off its engine via satellite or mobile phone and monitor the vehicle’s movements.

“This means that roadhogs barging into oncoming traffic will no longer have to be caught red-handed as this will all stay in the memory of the ERA-GLONASS server,” Izvestiya wrote.

ERA-GLONASS combines mobile communications and satellite positioning to provide rapid assistance to motorists in the event of a collision.

The system monitors in vehicle sensors for such events as airbag deployment to automatically transmit location details and summon assistance via emergency cellular service.

This will also make it possible to remotely control any vehicle equipped with an onboard ERA-GLONASS system, shut off its engine via satellite or mobile phone.
