Lavrov Awarded for His Contribution to Settling Iran's Nuclear Program

The World Council of Nuclear Workers (WONUC) has awarded a prize to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov for contribution to the settlement of the Iranian nuclear program issue, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) —  Andre Maisseu, the chairman of the WONUC Executive Committee, has awarded the Atoms for Peace prize to Lavrov, the statement said.

"The award is an important confirmation of the fact that the Russian policy of diplomatic settlement of crisis situations in the world is completely justified," the statement quoted Lavrov as saying during a meeting with Maisseu.

According to the statement, Moscow will stick to its course of promoting the development of nuclear energy and international cooperation in its peaceful use.

On July 14, 2015, Iran and a group of six international mediators – Russia, the United States, China, the United Kingdom, France and Germany – signed an historic deal to guarantee the peaceful nature of Tehran's nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. On January 16, the UN nuclear watchdog confirmed that Iran met its requirements under the deal, paving the way for sanctions relief.
