MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia’s Constitutional Court received its first appeal over impossibility to carry out the European Court of Human Rights’ (ECHR) decision, Russia's envoy to the court said Tuesday.
"The request concerns the decision of the ECHR in the Anchugov and Gladkov v. Russia case dated July 4, 2013 that the absolute prohibition applied in Russia for prisoners to vote in elections is contrary to the European Convention," Russian Deputy Justice Minister Georgy Matyushkin told the Kommersant newspaper.
On December 4, 2015, Russia adopted a law that gives its Constitutional Court the right to legally disregard the decisions of international courts if they violate the provisions of the Russian Constitution.
Following the announcement, Russian Foreign Ministry's Human Rights Ombudsman Konstantin Dolgov said that Russia was respecting an extensive amount of decisions carried out by the ECHR.
