Thank The Ban: Food Sanctions Make Moscow One Of Europe's Culinary Capitals
MOSCOW (Sputnik) It my be possible to have the sanctions imposed by Western states on Russia lifted as early as this year, Vladimir Dzhabarov, first deputy chairman of the Russian Federation Council's International Affairs Committee, said Monday.

"This year, both the European countries and the United States have shown real progress in [their] approaches to the issue of lifting the sanctions against Russia. Now there is a shared understanding that they are causing damage to everyone, without exception," Dzhabarov told RIA Novosti.

He added that Western leaders' tough anti-Russian rhetoric "is gradually fading away."

On Sunday, French Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron said that France hoped that the anti-Russia sanctions would be lifted this summer.

Relations between Russia and the European Union went downhill in 2014, when Brussels joined Washington in accusing Moscow of fueling the Ukrainian crisis, imposing several rounds of sanctions as a punitive measure.

The Russian authorities have refuted the allegations, warning that the Western sanctions are counterproductive. In response to the Western restrictive measures, in August 2014, Russia announced a one-year food embargo on products originating in states that imposed sanctions against it. The ban has since been extended for another year.
