VLADIVOSTOK (Sputnik) — Russians traditionally celebrate the holiday with their families and friends, Putin stated.
"Of course, not everyone is able to celebrate the New Year with their families. There is a need to work at hospitals and on the factory floor, perform office and military duty, protect the borders, bear a constant vigil to ensure our safety on land, at sea and in the air," the Russian leader highlighted.
He also expressed gratitude to all those who, day and night, weekdays and holidays, performed their duty.
"Today I would especially like to congratulate those servicemen who are fighting international terrorism, defending Russia's national interests in distant lands, showing will, determination and grit. We need these qualities everywhere, all the time and in all instances. Our country's success depends on the effective work and achievements of each one of us," Putin said in a New Year address to the nation.
Russian history, older generations' experience, particularly their unity in hard times, all help the country overcome modern challenges, the president said.
"In 2015, we celebrated the 70th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War. Our history, the experience of our fathers and grandfathers, their unity in difficult times, and force of spirit are a great example for us, they helped and will help us adequately respond to modern challenges," Putin said.
The president wished success and happiness to every Russian citizen and raised a toast to "Russia's prosperity."
