Prolonging Anti-Russia Sanctions After Tragedies 'Ridiculous, Wild, Silly'
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The European Union may lift anti-Russian sanctions by the end of 2016, Alexei Pushkov, a senior Russian lawmaker, said Friday.

"Sanctions, in my opinion, now turn into a residual phenomenon of the two-year confrontation between us and the EU, which was triggered by the Ukrainian crisis," the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Russia's lower house told Rossiya-24 TV channel.

Ukraine used to be the main topic on the international agenda, while nowadays the fight against Islamic State jihadist group is the top issue and it requires cooperation between the West and Russia, Pushkov added.

"My vision is that year 2016 has all chances to become the last year of sanctions," he said.

The European Union and its allies have introduced several rounds of anti-Russia sanctions, accusing Moscow of meddling in the Ukrainian conflict. The claims have been repeatedly denied by the Kremlin.
