Russia’s 43rd humanitarian aid convoy has set off for the eastern Ukrainian Donbass region, the Emergencies Ministry said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the ministry, the vehicles are mainly carrying food.

"At 04:00 Moscow time [01:00 GMT], the convoy left the Emergencies Ministry’s Donskoy rescue center and has begun movement to the state border. It comprises more than 100 vehicles carrying over 1,100 tons of humanitarian aid," the ministry’s press service told RIA Novosti.

Ukraine's Donetsk and Lugansk regions have been severely affected by fighting between Ukrainian troops and local independence supporters, which started in April 2014 when Kiev launched a military operation in Donbass.

Overall, Russia has delivered more than 50,000 tons of humanitarian aid to Donbass since August 2014. The previous convoy was sent last week.
