Those arrested are Russian nationals; they had arrived in Russia before the Russian Aerospace Forces began carrying out airstrikes in Syria. A criminal case has been opened on the matter and the suspects face up to 20 years in prison.

They planned to commit a terror attack in the Russian capital's public transportation, the service added.

"During the interrogation of two detainees it soon became known that they planned to carry out a terrorist attack on public transport in Moscow. Bandit underground provided them with money and gave them improvised explosive devices to organize and carry out a terror attack."

On Sunday, the Russian National Counter-Terrorism Committee said in a statement that a group of people involved in plotting a terror attack in Moscow had been arrested, an improvised explosive device had been located and defused.
