At least 1,200 people have been evacuated as a result of the fire on the fifth floor of the Druzhba Hotel in Moscow.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – About 1,200 people were evacuated from the Druzhba Hotel, located in the south-east of the Russian capital, in the early hours of Monday, amid heavy smoke caused by a fire on the third floor of the building, a Moscow law enforcement source told RIA Novosti.

"An evacuation of [around] 1,200 people was conducted at the Druzhba hotel, the reason was heavy smoke [that spread] over an area of 30 square meters [or a little over 98 square feet]," the source said on Monday, adding that the smoke, as well as the fire that caused it, have been completely eliminated.

There have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage after the incident.
