The first two Varshavianka-class (Improved Kilo) diesel-electric submarines may enter permanent service in the Black Sea Fleet as soon as the end of 2015, the commander of Russia's Navy Viktor Chirkov said on Saturday. The submarines are currently undergoing deep-sea trials in the Arctic.
A total of six Varshavianka-class submarines are planned for the Black Sea Fleet. The second batch of two submarines is currently undergoing trials at the shipyard in Saint Petersbutg. The final two submarines were laid down in October 2014.
"After the Black Sea Fleet receives these six submarines, it will be self-sufficient in its responsibility zone," Chirkov said.
This submarine design dates back to the 1970s and is considered one of the most versatile diesel submarine projects. In addition to its stealth, it has six 533-mm torpedo bays which automatically reload every 15 seconds.
