MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The planned Vesna ("Spring") opposition rallies will take place as scheduled outside of Moscow, but the one in the Russian capital will be replaced with a funeral march in memory of Boris Nemtsov, a Russian politician killed late Friday night, co-chair of the RPR-PARNAS political party, Mikhail Kasyanov, has told journalists.

"In connection with the [Nemtsov] murder the march in Maryino is canceled, a funeral march is set to take place in central Moscow on March 1…In the regions, the 'Spring' rallies and marches will be conducted according to the earlier planned program," Kasyanov told journalists on Saturday.

According to the Russian Interior Ministry, Nemtsov was killed at 11:40 p.m. Moscow time on Friday (20:40 GMT), when several shots were fired at him from a car, while he was walking with a female companion from Ukraine across the Zamoskvoretskiy bridge in central Moscow.

"Those who wish to honor the memory of Boris [Nemtsov] will be able to do so on the [Zamoskvoretskiy] bridge tomorrow," Kasyanov said on Saturday.

Kasyanov headed for the murder scene right after he found out about Nemtsov's killing. In an interview with RIA Novosti that night he said he had no guesses as to the possible motives behind the killing, but stressed that those responsible would pay a high price.

The RPR-PARNAS political party, of which Nemtsov was a member, held an emergency meeting on Saturday night, following Boris's murder. The meeting was attended by Ilya Yashin, a member of the party who was one of the first people to arrive at the crime scene.

Nemtsov, who served as Russian deputy prime minister under the country's former President Boris Yeltsin, was a co-chair of the RPR-PARNAS (Republican Party of Russia – People's Freedom Party) since 2012 and was also one of the leaders of the liberal Solidarnost movement.
