MOSCOW, July 5 (RIA Novosti) – British actress Tilda Swinton raised a rainbow flag in front of the Kremlin to show solidarity with the LGBT community, media reports said Friday, citing her publicist.

A photograph of her unfurling the flag, with Moscow’s iconic St. Basil’s Cathedral in the background, was reportedly released by publicist Christian Hodell.

“Please share this message from Tilda: ‘In solidarity. From Russia with love,’” Hodell was quoted as saying by PinkNews.co.uk, which trumpets itself as “Europe’s largest gay news service.”

The star of numerous films, Swinton notably played the mother of a gay son in “The Deep End” and the estranged wife of a former US intelligence official whose memoir is leaked to the Russians in “Burn After Reading.”

The release of Swinton's “solidarity” photo on Red Square comes shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law two recently passed bills that have provoked international outcry as a clampdown on homosexuals.

On Sunday, he approved legislation banning the promotion of “non-traditional sexual relations” toward minors. The law’s vague wording may enable individuals to be implicated for even telling children that gay people exist.

On Wednesday, he signed legislation banning adoptions of Russian children by same-sex couples abroad.
