In what may be the most morbid runway show ever, a crematorium in Western Siberia announced plans to present a collection of authentic dresses worn by widows in the Soviet Union in the 1940s.

NOVOSIBIRSK, June 22 (RIA Novosti) – In what may be the most morbid runway show ever, a crematorium in Western Siberia announced plans to present a collection of authentic dresses worn by widows in the Soviet Union in the 1940s.

The show was to be held on Saturday, which marks the 72nd anniversary of Nazi Germany’s invasion of Soviet Russia during World War II, in which Soviet losses stood at upward of 20 million, by most estimates.

The models were to be presenting the “stylish and touching outfits” to the tune of pre-war and war-era songs performed by the city orchestra, organizers said in a statement.

The runway show is a part of a broader exhibit of outfits and memorabilia of the World War II-era at the Museum of Funeral Culture housed by the city crematorium. It was to be wrapped by the release of 72 white balloons, which the organizers dubbed a “silent salute”.

This is not the first time the funeral museum offers an unconventional take on death-related matters: Last fall, it co-organized a hearse parade as part of an anti-drug rally in Novosibirsk, which ended in burning of Vice in effigy.
