A provincial Russian city will put up a monument to some of Russia’s best-known babushkas (grandmothers) in late May after a group of them took part in the Eurovision Song Contest last year, the local government announced on Wednesday.

IZHEVSK, January 16 (RIA Novosti) – A provincial Russian city will put up a monument to some of Russia’s best-known babushkas (grandmothers) in late May after a group of them took part in the Eurovision Song Contest last year, the local government announced on Wednesday.

Udmurtia Republic President Alexander Volkov signed a decree last July marking May 26 as Day of the Grandmother in the region – in honor of the Buranovskie Babushki, a folk-pop group consisting of eight elderly women who stole the spotlight at last year’s contest.

May 26 marks the day the women – donned in traditional attire, belting out Udmurt folk songs with a pop twist – won second place in the hugely popular competition, which typically draws around 100 million viewers.

A local commission of bureaucrats, architects, sculptors, scientists and artists has been formed to oversee the creation and installation of the new monument in the Udmurt capital of Izhevsk. A competition will be held to choose a design for the monument.
