Moscow is sure that Lithuania’s EU partners will not agree to include the issue of compensation “for damage from Soviet occupation” in the Russia-EU agenda, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday.

Last week Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius said reimbursement of damage caused to the Baltic State by Soviet occupation in 1940-1941 and by the Russian military in 1991-1993 should become part of Russia-EU dialog. A Lithuanian government commission has also put forward a “reimbursement” plan of action.

“We have repeatedly stated that there are no grounds whatsoever for making any compensation claims to the Russian Federation,” ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said.

“As far as we are concerned, that issue is closed once and for all.”

He warned that the “compensation” campaign could impair Russian-Lithuanian relations.
