The number of individual cases of critical air pollution in Russia increased by around 35% in 2010 year-on-year, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations said on Friday.

The number of individual cases of critical air pollution in Russia increased by around 35% in 2010 year-on-year, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations said on Friday.

The main cause of the increase was the forest fires that swept the country for two months during a heat wave last summer, the ministry said. Industrial emissions and the burning of domestic waste were also major polluters.

The head of the government's environmental protection department said that, aside from the pollution caused by the forest fires, there had been no year-on-year increase in air pollution in Moscow in 2010.
