YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, August 2 (RIA Novosti) - A 23-year-old woman was killed when an earthquake hit the southern half of Sakhalin Island in Russia's Far East at midday Thursday, a local emergencies ministry spokesman said.

Georgy Glukhov said the woman was killed when a section of a building fell on her as the local cultural center was being evacuated.

The temblor, which measured 6-7 on the Richter scale, also generated two tsunami waves 20-30 centimeters high on the Japanese island of Hokkaido, the local meteorological service reported.

No damage or injuries were reported as a result, and a tsunami warning was cancelled at 2:30 p.m. local time (9:30 a.m. Moscow time).
