MOSCOW, October 26 (RIA Novosti) - Crowds gathered in central Moscow Thursday to mark the fourth anniversary of the Dubrovka theater siege, which claimed the lives of 130 people.

In October 2002, terrorists seized the Dubrovka Theater during the Nord-Ost musical, holding 923 people hostage, and demanding the withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya. The siege lasted for three days.

Tatyana Karpova, who co-chairs the public organization Nord-Ost, told the crowd in front of the theater: "We have come to this square today to commemorate those who died, and to admire the courage of those who survived. We will always remember this."

Flowers were laid at a monument to the victims, and 130 white balloons, representing the number of the dead, were released.

Those attending the rally also paid tribute to Anna Politkovskaya, an outspoken journalist known for her staunch criticism of the Kremlin's military campaign in Chechnya, who was killed in her apartment building in Moscow on October 7.

Politkovskaya was one of the negotiators who persuaded the terrorists to pass food and water to hostages at the Dubrovka crisis.
