Russia Regrets US Questioning Agreements on Iran Nuclear Deal – Foreign Minister

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that "it's a pity" that the Iranian nuclear deal is being questioned by the US.

DVORIKI VILLAGE (Vladimir region) (Sputnik) — Moscow regrets that the United States is questioning agreements on the Iranian nuclear program, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Friday.

"Although the [US President Donald] Trump administration has confirmed that as far as the signed agreements are concerned, Iran is carrying out all envisioned actions, but still the Trump administration keeps calling these agreements wrong, erroneous. So it's a pity that such a rather successful treaty is now being questioned," Lavrov said at a forum in the Vladimir region east of Moscow.

Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump said in a press conference that he thinks Iran is not in compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) regarding its nuclear deal.

"I don’t think Iran is in compliance," Trump told reporters Thursday. "I don’t think they’re living up to the spirit of the agreement."

The United States, Trump added, will take strong action against Iran if it does not comply with the agreement.

On August 2, Trump signed a bill on new sanctions against Russia, Iran and North Korea, with the new restrictive measures targeting the Russian financial and energy sectors.

Tillerson had previously stated that he and Trump have differing views on the JCPOA deal with Iran.
