The US Department of State will seek advice of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee before executing any agreement with Russia related to the seized diplomatic compounds in the states of New York and Maryland, Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan said before the panel.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — At the time of the hearing, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov and US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon were holding talks in Washington, DC about the dispute over the Russian properties.

"Those properties are part of a larger dialogue with the Russian Federation… We will consult with you [the Foreign Relations Committee] on this issue before any final implementation of an agreement that we don't have yet with the Russian Federation," Sullivan stated on Monday.

The meeting comes after the delay of negotiations originally scheduled for June 23 in St. Petersburg.

In December 2016, the administration of former US President Barack Obama imposed a number of sanctions against Russia over its alleged meddling in the 2016 US presidential election, including the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats and the closure of two Russian diplomatic compounds in the United States.
