New Russian envoy to Turkey arrived at Ankara to participate in a special parliamentary session held on the first anniversary of the 2016 coup attempt.

ANKARA (Sputnik) — New Russian Ambassador to Turkey Alexey Erkhov has arrived to Ankara to participate in a special parliamentary session marking the first anniversary of an attempted coup in Turkey, spokesman of the Russian embassy in Ankara Alexander Leshukov told Sputnik on Saturday.

"New Russia's Ambassador Alexey Erkhov has arrived to Ankara today. Chief of Protocol of Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sevki Mutevellioglu met him at the airport," Leshukov said.

The spokesman added that the copies of the credentials will be submitted on Monday, however, Erkhov would take part in the parliament's meeting at the special invitation of Turkish parliament speaker.

On June 19, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree appointing Erkhov as the new Russian ambassador to Turkey to replace the late Andrey Karlov, who was fatally shot in December 2016 at the opening of an art gallery exhibition in Ankara.
