BERLIN (Sputnik) – German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has previously welcomed the UN-proposed pause, which his spokeswoman Sawsan Chebli said could serve as a "glimmer of hope" in the peaceful settlement of the Syrian conflict.

"I would like to say on behalf of the Chancellor that she very much welcomes that Russia wants to follow the UN requirements and ensure the 48-hour ceasefire," Seibert said at a briefing.

On Thursday, the Russian Defense Ministry welcomed a proposal brought forward by UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura for a 48-hour pause in fighting in Aleppo, and expressed readiness to implement next week the first 48-hour humanitarian pause to supply the city with aid as a "pilot project."
