The Czech Republic should not accept any asylum seekers under the EU quotas, even under the threat of the bloc's sanctions, Deputy Prime Minister Andrej Babis said in his article published on Wednesday.

PRAGUE (Sputnik) — The Czech Republic was one of the states in the European Union, along with Poland, Slovakia and Hungary that strictly opposed the implementation of the mandatory EU quota scheme to relocate thousands of refugees throughout the bloc, which was established in 2015.

"I will not respect the quotas… We must respond to the needs and concerns of our people, we must take care of the security of the citizens of the Czech Republic. Even at the cost of [EU] sanctions," Babis said in his article published in the Czech magazine Expres.

He added that he had long "stopped believing in successful integration" and no comments would make him change his mind.
