In an interview with Sputnik, Spanish politician and member of political party Izquierda Unida Miguel Mansanero Salavert commented on the recent statement of Donald Trump on Crimea, which he made over the weekend in an interview with ABC.

Donald Trump's statements about Crimea are related to his understanding of the need for good relations with Russia.

"These words are a direct consequence of Russia's military and political victory in Syria," the politician told Sputnik.

Trump Probably Makes Russia Nervous Despite Backing Crimea Secession
Earlier, Trump said that the people of Crimea would prefer being part of Russia instead of Ukraine. He also added that it would be good if the United States and Russia could get along.

According to Salavert, one of the reasons behind Trump's statement is also the fact that the US risks losing one of its main allies in the Middle East — Turkey.

"This would be a very serious blow to the US and NATO. The meeting between Putin and Erdogan that will be held in August in St. Petersburg makes the American establishment visibly nervous. I am confident that these negotiations can have enormous consequences for the development of relations in the Middle East. And Trump understands that," the politician said.

On June 27, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a letter addressed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, apologized for the downing of a Russian Su-24 attack aircraft by a Turkish jet in November 2015 and extended his condolences to the family of the pilot killed in the incident.

Trump Says Would Look Into Lifting Anti-Russia Sanctions
By doing so Ankara fulfilled one of the conditions put forward by Moscow following the incident that paralyzed the long-term partnership between the two countries.

According to Salavert, Trump seeks reconciliation with Russia, because he understands that the anti-Russian policy of Washington is completely unfavorable to the United States.

"Russia has not been broken. On the contrary, Moscow and Beijing strengthened their relations. There is a powerful economic alliance being created in front of us, which also includes India and other Asian countries. Of course, it will play an increasingly important role in the 21st century. Therefore, I believe that Trump's statement is a recognition of the real situation. Clinton also understands that," the politician concluded.
