The United States has called on Russia to influence the Syrian government to avoid offensive operations, US Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters in a press briefing on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Syria has been in the state of civil war since 2011. On February 27, a ceasefire worked out by Russia and the United States took effect in the country. Terrorist groups such as Daesh, as well as Jabhat Fatah al Sham (previously known as the al-Nusra Front), both outlawed in Russia, are not covered by the agreement.

“It is critical, obviously, that Russia restrain both itself and the Assad regime from conducting offensive operations, just as it is our responsibility to get the opposition to refrain from those operations,” Kerry said.
