MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Demonizing certain heads of states is part of the US policy, Syrian President Bashar Assad said in an interview with Cuban media published on Thursday.

"About how they defame, or try to demonize certain presidents, this is the American way, at least since the second World War, since they substituted British colonization in this region, and maybe in the world… They always lie," Assad was quoted as saying by Prensa Latina News Agency.

He named himself, Russian President Vladimir Putin and former Cuban President Fidel Castro as leaders subjected to US demonizing practices.

"So, we have to know that this is the American way. We don't have to worry about it," Assad added.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups. The United States and their western allies have many times tried to accuse Assad of being responsible for the bloodshed and insisted on his resignation.
