Russia's Parliament Speaker Hopes for 'Civilized Divorce' Between UK, EU

Russian Parliament's Upper House Speaker Valentina Matvienko expressed hope Saturday that the new UK government will manage to reach a compromise on a "civilized divorce" with the European Union.

KISLOVODSK (Sputnik) — She added that Russia is always ready for the mutually beneficial cooperation with the United Kingdom.

"The new UK government has to resolve many problems, first of all, the difficult task of ensuring a civilized divorce with the European Union. But we hope that the government will resolve these tasks effectively," Matvienko told journalists.

On June 23, a referendum was held in the United Kingdom, in which 51.9 percent of voters supported a withdrawal from the European Union.
