"I’ve said previously that if we want to protect our relationship with the European Union then Scotland may have to consider becoming an independent member. If it proves not to be possible to fully protect Scotland’s interests through the UK process then the Prime Minister knows that a second independence referendum is of course on the table," Sturgeon said in a statement after the meeting.
According to Sturgeon, May expressed willingness to consider any options that the Scottish Government may put forward to secure Scotland’s relationship with the European Union and that Scotland will be fully involved in discussions to give shape to the process of Brexit.
On June 23, a referendum was held in the United Kingdom, in which 51.9 percent of voters supported a withdrawral from the European Union. The Scottish National Party, led by Sturgeon, is pressing for a deal that would see Scotland remain part of the EU after 62 percent of Scottish voters backed remaining in the bloc in the Brexit referendum.
