LONDON (Sputnik) — Eleven ministers of the UK Labour’s shadow cabinet resigned on Sunday in a mass walkout that was triggered by Corbyn’s decision to sack the shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn.
"I regret there have been resignations today from my shadow cabinet. But I am not going to betray the trust of those who voted for me — or the millions of supporters across the country who need Labour to represent them. Those who want to change Labour's leadership will have to stand in a democratic election, in which I will be a candidate," Corbyn said.
Corbyn said that he will reshape his shadow cabinet and will announce the names of those in the new leadership team which is aimed to get the best deal with the EU for the people in the UK.
Seven shadow cabinet ministers have so far voiced their support of the embattled party leader, with shadow chancellor John McDonnell warning now was the time for the opposition to hold together.
The Labour leader had campaigned for the Remain camp ahead of the referendum on the British membership in the European Union. His future leadership became uncertain after 51.9 percent of the voters in the referendum said they were in favor of the UK leaving the bloc.
