Obama: UK and EU Will Remain 'Indispensable' Partners of US After Brexit

US President Barack Obama said that the United Kingdom and the European Union will remain "indispensable" partners of the US after Britons voted to leave the EU.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States respects the recent decision of UK voters to leave the European Union, US President Barack Obama said in a statement on Friday.

"The people of the United Kingdom have spoken, and we respect their decision," Obama stated.

“The United Kingdom and the European Union will remain indispensable partners of the United States even as they begin negotiating their ongoing relationship to ensure continued stability, security, and prosperity for Europe, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the world,” Obama stated.

On Thursday, the United Kingdom held a referendum in which 51.9 percent of voters opted for the country to leave the bloc. Following the final results, UK Prime Minister David Cameron, who had campaigned to remain in the European Union, announced his decision to resign.
