WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Canadian government will continue to cooperate with the authorities of the United Kingdom and the European Union in the Brexit aftermath, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement on Friday.

"The UK and the EU are important strategic partners for Canada with whom we enjoy deep historical ties and common values," Trudeau stated. "We will continue to build relations with both parties as they forge a new relationship."

He also added thatThe country's economy would be able to withstand uncertainty of the global financial markets following the decision of the United Kingdom to leave the European Union.

"Canada has tremendous economic fundamentals that we are strengthening with key investments in infrastructure and measures to grow our middle class," Trudeau stated. "We are well positioned to weather global market uncertainty as we have done in the past."
