Colombia's government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrilla group signed a historic ceasefire deal after some 50 years of the armed conflict.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Government of Colombia and the FARC pledged to complete the process of laying down arms within 180 days.

Besides, the sides agreed on measures that should be taken against criminal organizations that threaten the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and mechanisms for the deal's verification.

FARC is one of the world’s oldest Marxist insurgencies, formed in 1964 when it launched a war to overthrow the government of Colombia and install a revolutionary regime.

The latest effort to end the conflict in Colombia began with negotiations between the two parties in November 2012. Since then, the government and FARC have reached a number of agreements, including a plan to remove landmines, redistribute land to peasants as well as remove fighters under the age of 15 from jungle bases.

On Wednesday, Bogota announced that the sides managed to agree on the ceasefire.
