The authorities in the United States are considering measures in response to a possible vote by UK citizens this week to leave the European Union, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said in a briefing on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On June 23, UK nationals are set to vote in a referendum on the country's EU membership. Prime Minister David Cameron and the leaders of 27 EU member states agreed in February to grant the United Kingdom a special status within the bloc.

"I’m confident that somebody, somewhere in the US government is considering what sort of contingencies may need to be considered in the event that this vote goes down in the direction of the UK leaving the European Union."

The press secretary noted that the United States continues to believe and value "a strong UK and a strong EU." However, he underscored the British people should decide what is in the best interest for their country.

"The polling indicates this continues to be an uncertain outcome."

Earlier in June, Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen said an exit from the European Union, better known as Brexit, could have economic consequences on the United States.
