Hundreds of artifacts stolen from India were returned to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi by US Attorney General Loretta Lynch during a joint appearance in Washington, DC, the US Department of Homeland Security said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The press release noted that most of the items returned to India were recovered during Operation Hidden Idol, an investigation that started in 2007.

"More than 200 antiquities and cultural artifacts that speak to India’s astounding history and beautiful culture are beginning their journey home," Lynch stated during a ceremony on Monday.

The items were found during an investigation by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), several US Attorneys’ offices and the Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs.

One person is currently awaiting trial in India in connection with Operation Hidden Idol, five others were arrested in the United States, the release added.
