Turkey doubts that the German parliament will adopt a resolution on the recognition of Armenian genocide, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said Monday.

ANKARA (Sputnik) — Bundestag is about to debate the recognition of the 1915 killings of Armenians in World War I on the territories controlled by the Ottoman Empire as genocide. On May 20, German lawmakers proposed a resolution condemning the mass killings of Armenians. The parliamentary vote is scheduled for June 2.

"Nobody will listen to parliament opinions on this issue. I do not think that the German parliament will decide to damage German-Turkey relations to please a handful of politicians," Kurtulmus said during a briefing.

German Vote on Armenian Genocide May Put End to Turkish Denial Policy
He added that if Bundestag adopted the resolution to recognize the genocide after all, it would mean nothing but a "just a piece of paper" for Ankara.

Turkey has repeatedly denied accusations of committing mass murder of Armenians, claiming that the victims of the 1915 tragedy were both Turks and Armenians. Armenia insists on the recognition of the Armenian genocide by the Ottoman Empire by the international community. The Armenian genocide has already been recognized by Russia and numerous EU countries, as well as the European Parliament.
