WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On May 7, a group of hackers released the names, affiliations and contact information of more than 7,000 reporters working in eastern Ukraine. Following the release, the journalists have started to receive threatening emails.
"We call on you [Poroshenko] to condemn the unfounded and damaging allegations published on Myrotvorets [website], and to clarify publicly that the Ukrainian Interior Ministry is dedicated to protecting journalists and apprehending the people responsible for threatening them," the CPJ stated.
The CPJ also condemned the actions of Ukraine’s parliament member Anton Geraschenko and Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, both of whom praised the data release.
On May 24, the Myrotvorets website made public an additional list of some 240 home addresses of Ukrainian and international journalists working in Russia.
