Lavrov, Kerry Discuss Moscow's Proposal on Joint Strikes Against Nusra Front

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US State Secretary John Kerry discussed in a phone call on Monday Moscow's proposal to carry out joint operations against terrorist groups in Syria, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said last Friday that Moscow had proposed to Washington to conduct joint airstrikes against al-Nusra Front and other terrorist groups refusing to respect ceasefire in Syria. Washington has so far rejected Moscow's proposal.

"The discussion focused on the situation in Syria, including in light of Russia's proposal to conduct joint operations against terrorist groups operating in that country as well as other illegal armed groups that refused to join the ceasefire regime," the ministry said in a statement.

According to the statement, the top diplomats also discussed the possibility of "intensifying efforts by the international community to facilitate the peace process in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
