Consensus on Ceasefire in Karabakh Reached at Baku, Yerevan Talks

Understanding on the need to observe ceasefire in the Nagorno-Karabakh region was reached at the meeting of Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

On Monday, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev met in Vienna to discuss the conflict in the Azerbaijani breakaway region with a predominantly Armenian population. The meeting was attended by the foreign ministers of the United States, Russia and France.

"We have agreed to seek observance of the truce, ceasefire the way it was agreed on in 1994, 1995, and [our] joint statement will reflect this… [We] have agreed that the OSCE [Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe] will work on specific steps which would allow to investigate incidents on the contact line," Lavrov said after the meeting.

The top Russian diplomat added that he believed that the two sides would be ready to work on compromises on the issue.

"We shall promote this in every way," Lavrov stressed.

Sergei Lavrov also said that Armenian President and Azerbaijan President will agree in June on the date and place of their next meeting where they will discuss characteristics for settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"In June, the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia will agree on the time and the place of their next meeting where work will take place on agreeing on parameters of the final resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, taking in the account what has already been done within the framework of the political process," Lavrov said after the meeting.

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s (OSCE) Minsk Group also said that Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliyev have reiterated their commitment to peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh crisis.

On Monday, Sargsyan and Aliyev met in Vienna to discuss the conflict in the Azerbaijani breakaway region with a predominantly Armenian population. The meeting was attended by the foreign ministers of the United States, Russia and France as co-chairs of the Minsk Group.

"The Presidents reiterated their commitment to the ceasefire and the peaceful settlement of the conflict. To reduce the risk of further violence, they agreed to finalize in the shortest possible time an OSCE investigative mechanism," the OSCE Minsk Group said in a statement after the meeting.
