WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The partial ceasefire in Syria that was brokered by Russia and the United States in February was extended on Wednesday to the embattled northern city of Aleppo, where both government and militant forces have been shelling each other's positions.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, most parts of the Aleppo region are controlled by Syrian troops, but the situation remains difficult.
"Since then [renewed ceasefire] we have seen a reduction in the frequency and intensity of violence in that area of the country," Earnest stated. "We do continue to be concerned about some violations even in that area that continue."
The US wants to renew the cessation of hostilities agreement in Syria in the areas where it is beginning to fray, Josh Earnest said.
"We certainly are interested in continuing to refresh this cessation of hostilities in those areas where it started to fray," Earnest stated.
