SYDNEY (Sputnik) — The alliance between Australia and the United States will stay strong regardless of who becomes the next US president, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said Thursday.

"I have absolutely no doubt the Anzus alliance – the Australian-American relationship – will continue to grow and strengthen regardless of who the president is," Turnbull said when asked about the consequences of a possible Donald Trump presidency.

According to Turnbull, the relationship between the United States and Australia is deep because it is based on ties at an individual level that number in the thousands and even in the millions.

"Presidents and prime ministers can adjust it a bit but really it’s a deep and strong relationship, and I have no doubt regardless of who the American people choose we will always have a very strong friend and ally in Washington," Turnbull added.

Trump is now the only Republican candidate left as his last opponent Ohio Governor John Kasich recently exited the presidential race. Earlier this week, another Republican candidate, US Senator Ted Cruz, also dropped out of the race.

During his presidential campaign Trump had made several comments that have caused much controversy. He called the Geneva Convention a problem for US soldiers, has advocated tariff increases on Chinese goods and suggested banning Muslims from entering the United States.
