WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The announcement follows US Senate vote on Thursday night to confirm the nominations of Scaparrotti to assume leadership as Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR).
"The US president’s nominee as the 18th SACEUR, General Scaparrotti, is a great friend and a superb officer with exactly the right skills and experience for working in international collaborative environments," the outgoing SACEUR, US Air Force General Philip Breedlove, said.
The position Supreme Allied Commander Europe was established in 1951 by General Dwight Eisenhower, who later served two terms as US president. The SACEUR is responsible for the overall direction and conduct of global military operations for NATO, according to the press release.
Meanwhile, the US Senate also confirmed Army General Vincent Brooks as commander in Korea and Air Force General Lori Robinson as the new chief of the US Northern Command, the first woman to head a US combatant command.
