UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura has warned that the ceasefire regime in Syria could collapse and called for bringing it back to the previous level ahead of the next round of peace talks.

GENEVA (Sputnik) – The Russia-US brokered ceasefire regime in Syria came into force on February 27.

"In view of the extremely dangerous situation and potential collapse of cessation of hostilities…calling for a new round of talks in the course of May is urgent. But it is even more urgent that these talks are meaningful and.. the cessation of hostilities level is reaching back to the level that it used to be," de Mistura said.

According to the UN special envoy, about 10 civilians die in Syria every day.

"Ten, nine per day, we are getting to one every 25 minutes, civilians," de Mistura said.

Russia’s Proposal on Expanding Syria Terrorist Group List Discussed at UNSC

Russia’s proposal to include Ahrar ash-Sham, Jaish al-Islam in the Syria terrorist group list was discussed at UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura’s briefing to the UN Security Council.

"This was discussed with the Security Council now, I do not reveal the secret here. And the reply was by the SC [Security Council] was that this list of terrorist groups is a prerogative of the SC… By now, it is al-Nusra and Daesh [Islamic State]," de Mistura said.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces fighting numerous opposition groups, including the Western-backed allegedly moderate factions, as well as terrorist formations.
