WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US President Barack Obama and King Salman of Saudi Arabia have agreed on the need to maintain ceasefire in Syria and facilitate transition of power from President Bashar Assad, the White House said in a press release on Wednesday.

"On Syria, they discussed the importance of reinforcing the cessation of hostilities and committed to supporting a political transition away from Assad," the release stated.

The two leaders also discussed the situation in Iraq and the need to stabilize areas of Syria liberated from the Islamic State terror group, which has been outlawed by numerous countries, including the United States and Russia.

"Taking note of the political uncertainty in Lebanon, they undertook to consider steps to strengthen state institutions," the release added.

President Obama and King Salman also discussed regional challenges related to Iran’s activities.

On Wednesday, Obama began his visit to Riyadh which precedes the US-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit scheduled to take place on April 21.
