MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Savchenko, 34, was sentenced in late March to a 22-year jail term in Russia for her part in killing Russian journalists in eastern Ukraine, and refused to appeal the ruling, but Ukrainian authorities have been trying to find ways for her possible return to Ukraine.
"On April 19, 2016, the Russian Justice Ministry received a faxed request from the Ukrainian Justice Ministry on preparation of documents necessary to consider the repatriation of Nadezhda Savchenko to serve her sentence in her home country in line with Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons," the ministry's press service said in a statement.
The ministry stressed that Savchenko's repatriation is subject to a Russian court ruling after a number of conditions have been met, while the duration of consideration process is not regulated by the Convention.
