The Syrian government has the right to fight terrorists, and if this battle is stopped, the terrorists will reach Europe, the head of the Damascus delegation at the Geneva talks said.

GENEVA (Sputnik) – The Syrian government has the lawful right to fight terrorists in the country, in accordance with a UN Security Council on cessation of hostilities, the head of the Damascus delegation to the intra-Syria talks, Bashar Jaafari, said Wednesday.

"We are right in fighting all terrorist groups in Syria, it is our legitimate right," Jaafari told reporters.

According to the official, based on the UN Security Council resolutions, all the UN members are bound to help Syria and its allies in countering terror.

"Otherwise, if terrorism is not rolled back in Syria it will reach the whole of Europe," Jaafari added.

Syria has been mired in a devastating civil war between the government, opposition groups and terrorists since 2011.
